The single-column journaling Bible has become a staple format in Bible publishing (from an idea sparked by Mark Bertrand). I am glad to see publishers providing their translations in this format. This includes Zondervan’s latest edition: the NIV Journal Edition. This Bible, very wisely, doesn’t try to break new ground and do anything innovative. Instead, it follows the tried and true single-column journaling format to a tee, and does it as good as anybody. Binding This cover is soft dark-brown leather that’s simply called “Premium Leather” (it’s also available in imitation and hard cover). I don’t know what the...Read More

Zondervan will soon release their very own journaling Bible in NIV. I wanted to share a sneak peak before I dig in and start reviewing. My review copy is in premium leather… and wow… this leather is...Read More
First published in 2005, the NIV Archaeological Study Bible is one of the Bibles that help set the standard for modern Study Bible design. It’s also unique among study Bibles in that rather than being heavy in theological information its primary focus is Biblical archaeology. I prefer study Bibles that are not heavy in theology. It’s better to give you the tools to do your own study. I prefer commentary that gives insights on culture, history, etc. That’s what the Archaeological Study Bible is. It uses the 1984 edition of the NIV. I’ve used the NIV (in both hard...Read More
The NIV Zondervan Study Bible is the latest in the trend of full-color study Bibles. At 2880 pages, this is one of the largest and most complex study Bibles available. It uses the 2011 NIV text. Cover This edition is hard cover. It’s sewn and lays open easily. It’s so large that it actually bends in the spine. I’m not sure if this is normal or not. On a table it isn’t bad, but in my hand it will fold back. This bend does leave a crease. It comes with a dust jacket. The cover itself is gray/brown/green with...Read More
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of commissioning the NIV, Zondervan has developed the NIV Zondervan Study Bible. I picked up a sampler of this Bible at this year’s ICRS and took a few photos of the demo (its pages were blank). What I noticed is that it was a huge Bible. The sampler gave a good idea of the kind of info it would have. I received a review copy of this Bible a few weeks ago and at 3000 pages it’s the largest study Bible I’ve ever seen. You can see an overview here: Unpacking God’s Story Here are...Read More
