Binding

The cover is a coated paper and the binding is glued. It’s black with a gold spine. The front cover has a few lines to write your name. The back cover shows the description. It does require folding the pages in the front and back to get them to stay open completely. I’d love to have this in a spiral-bound edition. That would make a great project. The size is 8.5″ x 11″ x 1″, and it weighs 3 lbs.

Paper

The paper is extra thick and extremely opaque. It’s cream in color. I’d guess the GSM to be around 60 or higher. The texture is smooth and it’s great for all types of writing implements.

Table of Contents

Typography and Layout

The layout is from the LSB Giant Print, typeset by 2K/Denmark. This includes a double-column, paragraph layout with poetry set to stanzas, letters indented, and lists presented in a list format. It has wide margins on all four sides. Cross-references and translation footnotes are printed across the bottom of the page in a single column with bold chapter and verse references, making them easy to find. The header shows the book name and chapter number in the outer margin and the page number in the center. Section headings are in semi-bold italics.

The typeface is 10-point, black-letter. The text is dark and highly consistent throughout. It has between 6-8 words per line and enough white space for underlining. The text was printed with line matching (because the Giant Print has line matching), but the paper is so opaque that it doesn’t matter. Show-through is almost non-existent. Verse numbers are bold and black so they stand out and are easy to find. This follows the Lockman style guidelines for the NASB reference and footnote keys, so they start over with a and 1 for each verse. Books start on the same page that the last book ended. Poetry is divided into good places and looks balanced. There aren’t many lines with a single word. Supplied words are in italics. Old Testament quotes are in all caps.

Wide Margins

The margin space is 2 inches on the inner and outer margins and 2.25 for the top and bottom margins. This is some of the best margin space available for any wide-margin Bible. I’m using Pigma Microns and mechanical pencils in my examples.

References

The LSB New Testament Workbook contains 95,000 cross-references from the Lockman NASB. It also includes the full LSB footnotes. The cross-references and footnotes are placed together within the chapter and verse reference. They are excellent for deep study.

Here are a few example references to help you compare:

  • Matthew 28:19 – Mk 16:15; Mt 13:52; Ac 1:8; 14:21; Mt 25:32; Lk 24:47; Ac 2:38; 8:16; Rom 6:3; 1 Cor 1:13, 15; Gal 3:27

Table of Contents

Tables

In the back are a couple of tables. The first is Monetary Units. It lists the unit and an explanation of the unit. The second is Weights and Measurements. It also shows the unit and the explanation. Both are simple, but they’re useful for understanding the text.

Table of Contents

Bible Atlas

In the back are 4 Lockman Foundation maps printed on the regular Bible pages. They’re black-and-white and have lots of information and annotations. The text stands out, so they’re easy to read at this size and in monochrome. The maps include cities, empires, distances, routes, battle sites, mountains, settlements, seas, journeys, etc.

  1. The Herodian Kingdom in the Time of Christ
  2. a- Old Testament Jerusalem, b- New Testament Jerusalem
  3. The Ministry of Jesus
  4. The Missionary Journeys of Paul

Comparisons

LSB Giant Print Reference

The LSB Giant Print Reference has the same layout in the New Testament. The page numbering is different and the font is larger, but everything else on the page matches the NT Workbook. This makes them a good combo.

LSB Scripture Study Notebook New Testament Set

The LSB Scripture Study Notebook New Testament Set has a single-column layout with few verses per page and a lot more white space in the text. The font size is similar. The two products are vastly different so one doesn’t replace the other. The set has individual books that are easy to take with you.

Conclusion

The Legacy Standard Bible, New Testament Workbook is an excellent edition for taking notes. The paper is great for writing with any type of pens, markers, and pencils. It has a lot of space, and since it’s a reference edition, it’s good for studying the New Testament. I like that it matches the LSB Giant Print Reference. If you’re interested in an LSB NT for notes, the New Testament Workbook is an excellent choice.
