Cover and Binding

The cover is a dark blue bonded leather. It looks and feels like goatskin. It’s soft, very flexible, and has a pebbly grain. This is the best-looking bonded leather I’ve seen. The front and spine include gold printing. The cover includes perimeter stitching.

The liner looks to be the same leather as the outer leather, and it’s edge-lined. The block is sewn. It has some cockling, and some of the signatures lie apart from the others. It does not have any ribbons. The overall size is 7.25 x 10.5 x 1.8 inches, and it weighs 3 lbs, 10.7 oz.

Paper

The paper seems to be in the mid-30s in GSM. The paper is white and decently opaque. There is no glare under direct lighting. It had no issues turning the pages. It’s similar to the paper found in the ESV Preaching Bibles, so it should be okay with most pens that are made for writing in Bibles. There are a few extra end sheets in the front and back with lines for notes. These also help build structure.

Typography

The typesetting was done by 2K/Denmark, and it looks great. The 2020 NASB text is presented in a single column paragraph format. The header shows the name of the Bible in the outer margins. The footer includes the page number in the center, printed in gold. The book name and chapters that appear on that page are in the outer margin. These are divided from the text and from each other by lines. Translation footnotes are placed in the outer margin, printed in gold. Footnotes are marked with crosses in gold. The chapter numbers are also printed in gold. OT quotes are in all-caps.

The typeface looks to be around 10 point. It’s a black-letter text and it’s dark and consistent throughout. Principles are printed in gold text. It’s dark enough to read, but I wouldn’t mind if it were darker. The text is printed with line-matching, so the lines on both sides of the page are printed in the same location on the page. This improves readability. It has around 12 words per line and extra whitespace in the text to make it comfortable to read. Poetry looks great. It’s divided into good places and indents when the line wraps to the next line.

Wide Margins

The outer margin is 1.3 inches, and the inner margin is 1.1 inches. There is also a half-inch or more at the top and bottom. This is great for notes. Some of the margin space is taken by letters, labels, and footnotes, but there’s still plenty of room for notes.

Book Introductions

The book introductions are designed to look like a business book. They include sections that discuss theology, business, and community. This is meant to show the theology for work, business context, and the principles that contribute to a flourishing community. Together, they build business insights from the book. The text takes up around half a page, with the rest of the page and the next showing a business-style photo. The next page shows a quote from the book in extra giant print to reveal business content.

Study Material

The study material is interesting. It’s mostly in the biblical text and is marked with a line and a label. It almost comes across as a business document. If you’re familiar with a business plan, you’ll recognize elements such as an Executive Summary and case studies. It does include articles, but most of it is the biblical text with labels to show the business principles. It includes articles, briefs, case studies, and principles printed in gold.

Introduction

Several pages build an introduction to the topic. They include:

  • Founder’s Letter
  • Executive Summary
  • The Plan
  • The Principles
  • The Promise
  • The Path
  • Business Context
  • Business Characters
  • User’s Guide

Articles

There are 68 articles placed throughout the biblical text. They’re printed on a blue background. An index in the front shows the articles. The articles show the category and the letter for their category. They take about a page and discuss the principles from events in Scripture. They provide a detailed summary of the events. The articles are simple, but they do a great job of driving a biblical point home.

Case Studies

Case studies are Scriptures that illustrate business principles. The passage is marked as a case study and includes a title. An index in the front shows all of the case studies. This highlights the number of events, decisions, conversations, or other examples in the Scriptures that can be applied to business.

Gold Letter Verses, Gold Leaf Passages, and Icons

Certain text is printed in gold. This is the text that identifies a business principle. An icon in the margin identifies the category, using the first letter of the category. Key passages have a gold bar in the margin with the category of the passage.

Categories include:

  • Leadership
  • Business
  • Business Management
  • Economics
  • Investing
  • Generosity: Charity
  • Generosity: Philanthropy
  • Theology

QR Codes

QR codes are printed at the beginning of each book. They link to resources on the Business Bible’s app. This is launching soon, so it currently takes you to the website. It will include:

  • Daily Principles
  • Principles Based
  • Beset Practice
  • Recorded in the Bible
  • Business Content
  • Business News

Financial Weights and Measures

This includes tables for currency, weights and measures, liquid measures, and dry measures.

Principle Categories

This lists all of the major categories with their letter-icon. Each one includes another list of subcategories.

Gold Letter Principles Index

This is a more detailed version of the category index. It shows the Scripture references for each of the subcategories. This is a great way to find a verse on any business topic.

Bookmark

The bookmark is a good addition, since the Business Bible doesn’t have ribbons. This is a thick card that reminds me of watercolor paper. It shows the major categories with their letter icons. On the back is a list of the books of the Bible with their page numbers.

Maps

In the back are four maps printed on thick, semi-glossy paper. They have smaller maps printed within the larger maps. They include routes, journeys, cities, distance, seas, annotations, borders, and more.

Maps include:

  • Trade Routes
  • Main Highways
  • David’s Wars
  • Old Testament Travel
  • Jacob’s Journey
  • The Routes of Exodus
  • New Testament Travel
  • Paul’s Journey to Rome

Conclusion

I am a firm believer that, although the Bible is not primarily about business, it contains the key principles of running a business. The articles and tools in the Business Bible can’t show you everything you’ll ever need to know about business, but they do show you how to run a business God’s way, and they’ll help you build a strong foundation for business and management.  The Business Bible highlights the fact that the Bible itself is filled with business case studies.

This is an excellent Bible for anyone interested in business, an entrepreneur starting a business, someone managing a large corporation, anyone wanting to achieve better investment results, or someone wanting to learn how to give generously. I mostly recommend it for those interested in business management.
