Binding

The cover is Olive Green Genuine Leather. The grain looks like cowhide. The olive green is fairly dark, which I like. There is nothing printed on the front. The spine has all the text at the top, and the spine is slightly rounded. There are no indications of spine hubs. The leather is glued over the edge (no perimeter stitching). It’s fairly stiff, making it easy to hold it open in one hand.

The liner is paste-down black vinyl. It has one thick presentation page and a regular Bible page is glued to that. This Bible page can easily get caught on the thick page and wrinkle. The cover easily stays open at the beginning of Genesis. The text block is sewn.

It includes one 1/4″ olive green ribbon. It’s extra long and cut at an angle. The overall size is 6 3/4 x 9 3/4 x 1″, and it weighs 1 lb, 12.4 oz. This size is excellent for all-around usage.

Paper

The paper is around 30gsm. It has a smooth texture that’s just rough enough to grab and turn easily. It’s off-white in color and there is no glare under direct light. There is a little show-through, but it’s mostly noticeable in poetic settings. I find this paper to be good for reading.

Typography

The NLT text is presented in a double-column, paragraph format. Poetry is set to stanzas, lists are printed as lists, and personal letters are indented. The header includes the page number in the center next to the Filament icon, and the book name and chapter number in the outer corner. Translation notes followed by cross-references are printed under the last verse in the right column. Section headings are bold.

The font is 10-point. This is a red-letter edition. The black and red letters are about medium dark. The red has a touch of variation that’s noticeable if you’re looking for it. It was printed with line-matching, so the lines of text are in the same place on both sides of the page. This improves readability. The show-through is minimal enough that the text doesn’t look gray due to the text on the other side of the page.

It has around 10 words per line with enough space between the words and lines to be comfortable to read. This word count provides a good balance between prose and poetry, so prose doesn’t have too many words and poetry has enough space to break into good places. There are a few places where poetry has a single word on a line.

Asterisks are used to show that there is a footnote for a certain word. The text doesn’t include keys to the cross-references, so you just have to look to see what’s there.It has some extra space in the gutter to bring the text out of the bend and onto the flat part of the page.

References and Footnotes

Footnotes include the reference and the note. There are lots of footnotes to give insights into the translation. They include alternate renderings from the original languages, references, measurements, explanations, etc.

The cross-references and translation footnotes are placed under the last verse of the right page. This keeps the references and footnotes separate and makes them easy to access and use. Cross-references include verses and passages. It doesn’t have a lot of references, but the Filament app includes enough tools to make up the difference.

The Tyndale Verse Finder is a 32-page topical index designed for personal study and sermon prep. It’s not large, but I prefer it to a small concordance. It includes topics and sub-topics.

Visual Overview of the Bible

The Visual Overview of the Bible includes 15 pages of maps, charts, and infographics. printed on thick semi-glossy pages. They provide insights into biblical settings and events. They include lots of descriptions. I like the visual information. Some of it isn’t obvious what it’s showing at first and some of the charts are complex, but they are helpful.

Filament

The NLT Thinline Reference Bible, Filament-Enabled Edition is compatible with the free Tyndale Filament app. Scan any page to see notes, devotionals, and interactive media. The material is from the NLT Study Bible, Tyndale devotionals, etc. As always, I recommend using the material for reference and doing your own study.

The app includes:

• Library of worship music

Study – these are the study notes from the NLT Study Bible and other resources. It shows the verses the notes correspond to so you can select what you want to see.

Reflect – these are from Tyndale devotionals. They include a list of titles to click on. They’re short and include the resource name at the bottom to help you find the books if you want. I found them interesting and insightful.

See – this includes videos, infographics, and interactive maps. They include a featured image, title, the type of resource it is, and the Scripture references they correspond to, making it easy to decide what you want to see. The infographics have detailed descriptions. The maps show information for the area that you select on the map.

You can also navigate manually through the Bible books, chapters, and verses, adjust the font size, select a light or dark theme, switch between Bibles, and read the tutorial. I found the app to be intuitive. The Filament app is compatible with Android and iOS.

Final Thoughts on NLT Thinline Reference Bible, Filament-Enabled Edition

The NLT Large Print Thinline Reference Bible, Filament-Enabled Edition in Olive Green Leather is an excellent large print thinline NLT. The olive green leather looks like cowhide, which is one of my favorite leathers. I’m actually surprised at how much I like the color. The paper is thin but it’s opaque enough for reading. I found the text highly readable. It doesn’t have a lot of references, but the Filament app adds a lot of study and devotional material which keeps the Bible smaller. If you’re interested in a large print NLT, the NLT Large Print Thinline Reference Bible, Filament-Enabled Edition in Olive Green Leather is an excellent choice.
