Crossway’s Greek New Testament with Dictionary is a new version of their previous Greek New Testament. Teams at Cambridge and Tyndale House reexamined the standard text including spelling and paragraphing, and compared the text to recent discoveries. As the name suggests, this one adds a dictionary. But, it adds a lot more than that. The dictionary includes lots of information that eliminates the need for other reference material. The dictionary makes it ideal for any student of Greek, pastors, teachers, or anyone wanting to learn more Greek. This is ISBN: 9781433579642, printed in the UK by Tyndale House, Cambridge.

Material and Construction
This is a hardcover edition. It’s vinyl-coated in black and has gold printing on the front and spine. The spine is rounded to give it an elegant look. The liner is pasted-down with reinforced vinyl. It’s Smyth sewn and has no trouble staying open on any page. The overall size is 5.5 x 8 x 1.25″ and weighs 1 lb, 7.8 oz. It includes a .25″ black ribbon. It’s long enough to pull to the corner to open the Bible. It also has black and gold head/tail bands.
The paper seems to be thinner than the 70gsm in the previous edition. This is to keep the book thinner. I’d guess it to be around 50gsm. It’s similar to the paper used in their other hardcover specialty editions. It’s elegant and has a slightly creme color with no glare. This paper is extremely opaque and easy to turn, and it’s a joy to read from. The page edges are white. I love this paper.
It comes in a black slipcase that’s built with thick cardboard. It feels heavy-duty enough that it can protect the Bible. The front and spine match the Bible, while the back includes the sales information about this Bible.
Typography and Layout
The Greek text is printed in a single-column paragraph layout. The chapter and verse numbers are in the outer margin in the header. The book’s name is printed in the center. Page numbers are printed in the inner margin. Footnotes are placed across the footer. The text does not include footnote keys. The footnotes include the verse numbers they correspond to. They include the portion of text, a list of manuscripts that support the reading, variant readings, and a list of manuscripts that support the variant.
The layout is unique and works great. The verse number that starts each paragraph is placed in the outer margin. Every line after the first line in the paragraph is indented. Verse numbers within the text have extra space around them, making them easy to find quickly.
The font is 10-point. It has extra space between the lines, making it highly readable. It has around 10-12 words per line and is printed with line-matching. Introduction
The introduction is placed after the New Testament. It introduces this edition of the New Testament and provides lots of information about how it was developed. It discusses history, orthography, the order of books, paragraphs, breathings, accents, punctuation, the apparatus, and the witnesses. The witness are several pages of tables that list all the manuscripts that were used. They include the manuscript names, century they’re from, preserved contents, and city.
Dictionary
The dictionary in the back is the only new addition since the original version. It’s made up of several tools. Here’s a look at each.
Preface
The preface introduces the dictionary and provides information on how to use it. It covers lemmas, forms, etymology headwords and etymology groups, definitions, Scripture references, and surface form to lemma relation. It’s only a few pages but it covers each of them in enough detail that it helps in understanding how to use the dictionary.
Bibliography
The bibliography lists other dictionaries, lexicographic resources, and grammars that were used for this Greek New Testament. This is a good list of resources for further research.
Abbreviations
The abbreviations table provides a list of all the abbreviations used for the parts of speech in this Greek New Testament.
Surface Form to Lemma Relation
This is an 83-page list with three columns per page. It shows the surface form of the word and points to the lemma relation. It shows a one-to-one relationship.
Etymology Headwords Not Appearing in the Dictionary
This small table (1.5 pages) lists the etymology headwords that are not used in this dictionary. It provides the words in Greek and English. Some of the words include information.
Etymology Group Relation
This is a 22-page list that shows the relation between etymology and groups. It provides the etymology and lists all the words in the group.
Dictionary
The dictionary is the largest part of the back material. It’s slightly larger than all the other tools combined. It takes 156 pages and has 2 columns per page. It gives the word in Greek, the part of speech, and a definition with a Scripture reference. Many of them include multiple definitions with Scripture references for each. They’re listed in order of the most to the least prevalent. It only includes the senses of a word that appears in the New Testament.
Conclusion
The Greek New Testament with Dictionary from Crossway is an excellent tool. Although I liked the previous edition, this one is a better Greek New Testament because of the dictionary. It’s still made and designed well. The Greek portion is exactly the same as the previous edition. The dictionary adds a lot of information to help any Greek student. I highly recommend Crossway’s Greek New Testament with Dictionary to any student of the Greek New Testament. It will also be helpful to teachers, preachers, and pastors.
