The NLT Giant Print Premium Value Bible is a highly readable Filament-enabled text Bible at a good price. By moving the study material to the Filament app, readers can carry a giant print Bible that doesn’t require heavy lifting to love it around. It’s available in several covers. I’m reviewing the British Tan Mountain LeatherLike, ISBN: 9781496482631, printed in China.

Cover and Binding
The NLT Giant Print Premium Value Bible is available in several different LeatherLike covers including Lavender Vine, British Tan Mountain, and Black. The cover for my edition is British Tan Mountain LeatherLike imitation leather. It’s smooth and has a small grain that gives it some color variation. The front has a large mountain stamped into it with Holy Bible under it. The mountain has trees in front of it. I love this design. The spine has the text in the center and lines stamped into the top and bottom to give it an interesting design. The back of the cover has a smaller version of the mountain, and Isaiah 52:7 is stamped into it.
The liner is a paste-down paper that doubles as the presentation page. This text block is sewn. It stays open at the beginning of Genesis, but it needs to be broken in before it stays completely open. It doesn’t include a ribbon. The overall size is 7 x 9.5 x 1.75 inches and it weighs 2 lbs, 11.6 oz.
Paper
The paper seems to be around 30GSM. It’s not a premium paper. It’s off-white and has a slightly rough texture. The show though is more noticeable than I’d like. The page edges are white. The paper does fit within the price range.
Typography
The text in the NLT Giant Print Premium Value Bible is presented in a double-column, paragraph layout. Poetry is placed into stanzas, personal letters are indented, and lists are presented as lists. Translation footnotes appear across the bottom of the page. The header shows the page number and Filament icon in the center and the book name and chapter number in the outer margin.
The font is 14 point. It’s dark and highly readable. This is a black letter text. It wasn’t designed with line-matching, and the lines on the opposite side of the page are noticeable. It has around 6 words per line. The poetic settings have lots of lines with one word. Footnotes are indicated with asterisks. I like this because it keeps the text readable. Verse numbers are large, but they’re printed with a thin font. This makes them easy to ignore, but they can be difficult to find quickly.
Footnotes
The footnotes in the NLT Giant Print Premium Value Bible are printed in a large font and include the reference so it’s easy to know which footnote goes with which verse. The footnotes include references, alternate renderings, ancient translations, Greek and Hebrew explanations, manuscript variations, monies, weights, measures, etc. Some of the notes about manuscripts identify the manuscript.
Life Application Topics Index
The only tool in the back is the 49-page Life Application Topics Index. It presents the most prominent topics in the Bible. The topics include related sub-topics with a key verse for each. The topics also include recommended topics, or the topics to see if the main topic is covered under a different name. Some of the sub-topics include descriptions with references while others print the Scriptures in full. This is a useful tool for devotions or simple study. The Filament app is a lot more useful, but it is interesting to see a tool in the Bible so you don’t always have to use an external device.
Filament App
The NLT Giant Print Premium Value Bible is Filament enabled, meaning that it is compatible with the free Tyndale Filament app. Scan any page to see notes, devotionals, and interactive media. The material is from the NLT Study Bible, Tyndale devotionals, etc. As always, I recommend using the material for reference and doing your own study.
The app includes:
- 25,000 study notes
- 350+ videos
- 40+ maps and infographics
- 400+ profiles and articles
- 1,500+ devotionals
- Library of worship music
Study – these are the study notes from the NLT Study Bible and other resources. It shows the verses the notes correspond to so you can select what you want to see.
Reflect – these are from Tyndale devotionals. They include a list of titles to click on. They’re short and include the resource name at the bottom to help you find the books if you want. I found them interesting and insightful.
See – this includes videos, infographics, and interactive maps. They include a featured image, title, the type of resource it is, and the Scripture references they correspond to, making it easy to decide what you want to see. The infographics have detailed descriptions. The maps show information for the area that you select on the map.
You can also navigate manually through the Bible books, chapters, and verses, adjust the font size, select a light or dark theme, switch between Bibles, and read the tutorial. I found the app to be intuitive. The Filament app is compatible with Android and iOS.
Conclusion
I found the NLT Giant Print Premium Value Bible a joy to read and use. I find the show-through to be a little distracting. If I could change one thing I’d make the paper more opaque. It is still usable though, and it’s to be expected at this price point. My review copy has a range of created pages in John and Revelation. They’re only small creases, but it’s probably a common issue for this price point, so I wanted to mention it. For the money, the NLT Giant Print Premium Value Bible is an excellent choice for anyone who wants a budget giant print NLT.
