Cover and Binding

This edition is a beautiful 2-piece mahogany imitation leather called Mahogany Leathertouch. This is one of the best imitation leathers that I’ve seen in a Bible. It does not feel cheap at all. It has stitching around the perimeter and around the middle. The material is thick and fairly stiff, and it doesn’t want to lay flat when it’s closed. On the spine are KJV, HOLY BIBLE, Holman, and double-lined bands printed in gold that brings out the beauty of the cover. All this makes the cover look very elegant. It has a paper liner and the binding is glued. It didn’t want to lay flat in Genesis. I’m sure the cover will loosen up with use.

Paper and Print

The paper is thick and opaque. There is very little show-through, although there is some. The print is where this Bible really stands out. It has a 12-point font that has a nice medium boldness and is consistent throughout. The red-letter, which goes through Revelation, is about a medium red tone and looks good. There are pronunciation marks to indicate which syllable to accent. Paragraphs are indicated by bold verse numbers. I like this feature a lot. The top of the page contains page summaries and chapter and verses that appear on that page.

References and Notes

References and notes are placed at the end of the verses. They are one of the weak points of this Bible. There are not a lot of them. There are even fewer translation notes. The notes and references that are here are good, there just needs to be a few more. For example, messianic prophecies are marked in both testaments, but about half of them don’t give the reference of the prophecy or fulfillment.

Study Helps

The study helps include articles such as How to Read the Bible Through (which include reading tips and a 52 week reading plan), A Short History of the Holy Bible (which contains a short introduction to each book), a list of favorite readings from the Bible, and a harmony of the Gospels that is sectioned into the events in Jesus’ life, miracles, parables, etc. This section doesn’t take up a lot of pages and has a lot of useful and interesting information.

Concordance

The concordance is 53 pages and is also giant print. This is the simplest concordance that I’ve seen in a Bible. There are not a lot of entries. There are no entries for ‘God’. I wouldn’t recommend this concordance for Bible study. It might do in a pinch if you’re out somewhere and need to find something.

Maps

There are 8 color maps printed on thick glossy paper. They are very colorful and readable.

Ribbon Marker

The ribbon marker is also mahogany. The color matches perfectly with the mahogany cover and looks really good. It’s .25 inch thick and is long enough to be useful.

Thumb-Index

The cuts for the index tabs are square, giving this Bible a unique look. The tabs for the Old Testament are black with gold lettering, while the tabs for the New Testament are red with gold lettering.

Messianic Prophecy Indicators

Messianic prophesies in the Old Testament are marked with empty stars. There fulfillment in the New Testament is marked will filled-in stars.

Conclusion

Holman’s Hand Size Giant Print Reference Bible is a nice Bible for its size and cost. This is not a thin-line, so it’s still slightly large for hand size. It has one of my favorite imitation leather covers, a large 12-point font, a unique thumb-index, and is a nice handy size. These features alone are worth the price of this Bible. Some of the tools could be better, such as references and concordance, but this is still a nice Bible for reading and carry. I recommend Holman’s Hand Size Giant Print Reference Bible in KJV for anyone that want’s a nice readable font in a hand size Bible with thumb-index. It is one of the nicest Bibles in its price range.
