I have and have used the Holman NKJV which is the text block that Allan used for theirs. It is too bad (at least to me) that for the price they charge, they didn’t print it on better quality paper. Of all the bibles you’ve presented above, the TBS Westminster Reference is in my opinion the best. It’s got a great layout, tons of references and supplemental material and a very clear font on excellent paper.

Hi Dave. The Westminster is one of my top choices for best Bible. I love the paper, print, references, definitions in the margin, and some paper for notes. And it’s a perfect size for carry and reading. Great choice!

I know this is an old post but I was wondering how much difference there is between the font size of an regular size Thompson Chain bible and Cambridge NKJV wide margin?

Hi Brian. Those three make an excellent comparison. Here’s the quick version:

Allan (Holman text block) – 9 point
      Cambridge – 8 point
      Thompson – 8 point

The easiest to read is the Holman (Allan). It’s a 9-point font and is the boldest of the three. It has more space between the lines than the Cambridge, but not as much as the Thompson. The Cambridge and Thompson both have around an 8-point font. The Cambridge is slightly bolder but doesn’t have as much space between the lines. The paper in the Cambridge is the best of the three and it makes the font much easier to read than the Thompson. My personal favorite for readability is the Holman.

    HI,
Enjoy your reviews on bibles. I pastor in Maryland and have been searching for a premium NKJV bible for preaching. Unfortunately, most of the nicer bibles are paragraph format and not best for preaching (at least not for me). I liked your review on the Holman (Allan), but it doesn’t have any cross references. The Holman (made by Holman) is no longer available, according to Amazon and I searched for it.

Any ideas of a verse format with 9 or 10 font?

    Randy,
You are too nice and sorry to take your time. Actually,I called Evangelical Bible and the Holman you reviewed is no longer being published. The ones you were so kind to point out are similar, but the format is paragraph instead of verse. The one you reviewed is verse format. I also called Holman today and they were very nice and said it was no longer published and in the future they will be doing only the Holman translation???

So, I continue my quest for a preaching bible of good quality, verse format, 9-10 font.

Thanks and I will continue reading your reviews.

Hi Tom. Please give them the ISBN number of the one you want. The only one out of stock is the brown cowhide. They do have the other 3.

Sorry, but should add that I also asked Evangelical Bible about the Allan Bible which I would have purchased and they said it was paragraph format.

    Hello,
I am looking for some help finding just the right bible and I thought you might be able to help. I have used the Cambridge concord reference KJV for many years now, but I would like to begin reading the Bible with my family and I wanted a different version with the same format. I like the center column references and I like the font and the maps etc. Is there a Bible with the concord format in a New King James version? Or do you have any recommendations? I purchased the Pitt Minion Bible a few years ago with the NKJV, but I am not as pleased with the format. I like the verse reference at the beginning of each verse for ease of locating the right verse, but the Pitt Minion does not have that in the formatting. I wrote to Baker Books several years ago to get their input, and they said the closest thing in the Cambridge line is the NKJV wide margin Reference edition. I wondered if there are any other publishers out there with a similar format in high quality leather binding. I would like the New King James version in a format like the old KJV Concord I have. I have used the Thompson chain reference in the past and I don’t mind that layout, but I haven’t been able to find one of those in decent quality leather binding. Do you know where I could find what I am looking for?
    Thank you,
    Jacob

Hi Jacob. The Concord is one of my all-time favorites for the reasons you mentioned. Unfortunately, I don’t know of anything similar in NKJV. Other than the Thompson, the Clarion is the only other NKJV I know of that has references near the verses, and they’re not always close. I’ll keep an eye out for something similar.
