KJV My Promise Bible Review

Christian Art Publishers has released a new KJV illustrated journaling Bible called the My Promise Bible. It is a good solid journaling Bible with many features common to this Bible type and a few special features all it’s own.

Christian Art is the Publisher that produced the My Creative Bible last year.

ISBN: 9781432125165

Christian Art Publishers provided this Bible free for review. I was not required to give a positive review, only an honest one. All opinions are my own.

CONSTRUCTION AND MATERIALS

I’m reviewing the flex cover version which has a butterfly and leaf pattern in blue and purple highlighted with silver. The Bible measures 13″ x 6.5″ x 1.75″ and weighs 2.5 pounds.

It has a sewn binding and two attached ribbon markers, one blue and one purple.

The page edges are decorated in a purple and blue butterfly pattern.

It has creamy approximately 36 to 38 gsm paper that is fairly common in journaling Bibles.

The My Promise Bible is also available in a pink and white hardcover with flowers. (This picture is from Christian Arts website) My daughter wants her own copy  so we’ll be ordering a pink one soon.

TYPOGRAPHY

The text is laid out in a single column verse-by-verse format. There is a 2 inch wide margin with 36 light lines in all the margins that don’t contain artwork.

It has an 8 point font in all black letter. The ink darkness is consistent. There is a bit of show-through but it’s rarely distracting. The header contains page numbers in the outer corners and the guide references (book name, chapter number, & verse number) centered over the text.

BOOK INTRODUCTIONS

One unique feature is the book introductions. At the beginning of each book is a brief overview of the book and a list of key promise verses in that book. A promise verse is illustrated at the bottom of the page.

ARTWORK

The artwork is of course the core feature.

There are illustrated book names with a key verse on the first page of each book.

A small number of full page illustrations are included.

Most of the illustrations are a specially lettered verse and artwork filling the side margin.

There are several examples of word art.

With the book introductions all books begin at the top of a page. The extra space this creates at the end of many books is sometimes left blank, sometimes filled with scripture art and sometimes contains just drawings like this one.

This is the two page illustration found inside the front cover.

Colored pencils of course works well on this paper.

This is watercolor without gesso or any sealant. I made sure not to scrub my paint into the page and dry often.

While there is noticeable crinkle (some of which will flatten out with the book stored closed) there is no bleed through and almost no show-through.

BIBLE PROMISES BY THEME

One of my favorite features is the Bible promises section in the back. It has a list of 52 themes that the Bible makes promises about.

Then each theme gets it’s own page with an illustrated border and three to five relevant scriptures fully printed out. This is a great way to find a verse on a specific topic quickly  when you need inspiration. It would also make a good start to a Bible study on the topic. Some of these verses have illustrations in the main portion of the Bible and some you would be able to illustrate yourself.

EXTRA FEATURES

There is an index of all the illustrated verses and word art.

They have included 12 sheets of thicker art grade paper, each one with an illustrated frame on one side and blank on the other. Six of these pages have a prompt (like  God’s Promise for Me… and Prayer Changes Things) and the other six have no writing.  You could use these to make your own promise lists or write favorite verses. They would also be good for using a few of those art supplies you already own but are unsure of placing on standard bible paper.

Inside the back cover is a purple pocket. It opens toward the spine and would be useful for keeping study notes and flat things (like tip-ins, stickers, stencils, etc.) you use frequently or plan to use soon with your Bible.

At purchase it contains one plastic pouch with a complete set of Bible index tabs with installation instructions, a placement guide, and a few full color stickers.

It also has a pouch with 4 sheets of stickers to color.

FINAL THOUGHTS ON THE KJV MY PROMISE BIBLE

I love the idea of expanding the range of illustrated Bibles on the market by having some that focus on specific topics. The My Promise Bible is an excellent example of how that can work. They have included a nice assortment of extra features without adding so many they bulk up the Bible too much. I highly recommend this for anyone looking for an illustrated journaling Bible (as your first or to add to the one you already own that’s getting full) especially if you prefer the King James translation or are wanting to focus on the promises of God.
